How We observe the International Mother Language Day

How We observe the International Mother Language Day যেভাবে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস পালন করা হয়

The International Mother Language Day is also our Martyrs' Day. The Martyrs' Day has been being observed in our country on the 21st February every years since after 1952. Now, we observe both our Martyrs' Day and the International Mother Language Day simultaneously on the 21st February under the same programme. The Day is our national holiday. On this day the national flag is hoisted half mast on all public buildings and private houses. People wearing black badges and singing mourning songs walk bare footed to the Shaheed Minar at dawn and pay homage to the language martyrs. They offer wreathes of flowers at the platform of the Shaheed Minar as a mark of the nation's gratitude to them for their supreme sacrifice for the cause of the mother tongue. This is done all over the country by the people of all walks of life. Students hold Shaheed Day parade in their play-grounds. Discussion meetings, seminars or symposia are held in all educational institutions highlighting our achievements and our duties to do for development of our mother tongue. Bangla Academy observe the day according to their own programmes. The leading socio-cultural institutions and organisations also arrange meetings and symposia in their own premises. The national dailies bring out special supplements on this day. The Bangladesh Radio and the Bangladesh television also telecast special programmes on this occasion. This is how we observe the International Mather language Day together with the observance of our language Martyrs' Day.
